We lost a very valuable officer in Miss Johnson, who died in August
last.
She will be missed by the mothers on the district in which she
worked.
The Antenatal Clinics are also doing good work under Dr. Bergin
and Dr. Shepherd, and the number of mothers desiring advice and
instruction is increasing.
Artificial Sunlight Treatment is still being given at Guy's Hospital
to children, whom the Medical Officers of the Welfare Centres consider
proper subjects for the treatment.
During the year covered by my report, the 1930 Housing Act came
into force dealing with Clearance Areas, Improvement Schemes and
Measures affecting individual unfit houses.
Under this Act I brought forward four Areas, which, owing to their
dilapidated and insanitary condition, and being injurious to the health
of the inhabitants, should be dealt with as Clearance Areas, and the
buildings thereon demolished.
The number of houses granted to families from Southwark by the
London County Council was 113 during the year.
The Local Government Act, 1929, also came into force on the
1st April, 1930, and the duties under this Act with respect to
Vaccination and Vaccination Officers are now included in the personnel
of this Department.
A full report of the work of the Tuberculosis Dispensary is appended
to this report. The mortality was lower than that of the previous
year, which may be taken as a sign that this disease is gradually being
jessened, which is no doubt accounted for by the strenuous effort
made to combat it, not only in Southwark, but in all parts of the
Country.
