BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK.
Public Health Department
Town Hall,
Walworth Road, S.E. 17.
To His Worship the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors,
Dear Sir, Ladies and Gentlemen,
In presenting my report for the year, 1930, I have pleasure in
recording that from a Health point of view, the year has heen a good one
In the first place, the Death Rate 12.5 and the Infant Mortality
Rate 57 are the lowest recorded in the history of the Borough.
In regard to the Birth Rate 16 8, this has been steadily declining
for several years, and is general in London as well as the Provinces.
The number of cases of infectious disease notified, was fairly normal,
but it is satisfactory to note in this connection that the deaths were
below the average of past years.
The Register General in computing his estimate of the population for
mid-year, 1930, intends to take into account the population as ascertained
by the 1931 census, the 1930 estimate will, therefore, not be available
before the end of June.
Under these circumstances the various rates in my report have
been calculated on the 1929 estimated population, viz., 178,500.
The Maternity and Child Welfare work has progressed well, this is
summarised in the tables at the end of the report, and the very low
Infantile Mortality Rate, points to continued success, and encouragement
to the workers.
