The Rateable Value of the Parish is made up as follows:—
Railways £70,334

Theatres and Taverns attached thereto 1,571
The Town Hall 1,000
Other Assessments of £500 and upwards,
including Model Dwellings of that value 21,008
The Workhouse and Infirmary belonging to the
Holborn Union in the City Road, is by
Local Act rated at £19 only.
The Shoreditch Workhouse and Infirmary is not
Assessed.
The total of the above is £147,355, which shows that the
ordinary Assessments, under £500, amount to £504,974.
ASSESSMENT OF BOARD SCHOOLS.
In the last Annual Report the following statement was made:
"An Appeal of considerable importance was made to the Assessment
Sessions by the London School Board, and in respect to the
Board Schools in St. John's road. The point in dispute was not so
much the value of the premises as ascertained by the ordinary
methods, but the principle upon which Board Schools ought to be
assessed. The amount of gross and rateable value has generally
been determined upon a reference to the value of the land and the
cost of building, and this was decided by the Court of Assessment
Sessions some years ago to be the correct method. The School
Board now contends, that neither the cost of the Schools nor the
rent which the Board would have to pay if they hired the same
furnish the correct criterion of value, but the Schools should be
rated at a nominal figure (say £150 instead of £1000), because
they are compelled to carry them on at a loss, and consequently no
