NEW STREET, SUN STREET TO WORSHIP
STREET.
The closing of Sun Street by the great Eastern Railway has
proved, as was expected, a most serious injury and inconvenience to
the public, and although a new footway has been made between the
two railway stations from Liverpool Street to Skinner Street, this,
by having no communication with Sun Street or indeed any other
streets between its termini, affords no adequate accommodation in lieu
of that destroyed by the stoppage. It has long been seen that the
only scheme by which even an approximate substitute for the disused
thoroughfare could be provided was the formation of a new street, in
continuation of Curtain Road, on the line of the present Long Alley
to Sun Street and thence probably to Eldon Street. In accordance
with that view the Vestry instructed its architect, Mr. Robert Walker,
to make a survey of the locality, and a plan and estimate of the new
street and probable cost. The report gave the nett estimated cost of
the street, including roads and sewers, as about £50,000.
The Vestry then resolved that the Metropolitan Board be
requested to obtain powers for the construction of the street, towards
the cost of which the Vestry were prepared to offer a liberal contribution.
This request was favourably considered, and the Metropolitan
Board caused plans and estimates to be prepared which substantially
agreed with the Vestry's estimate. The Board then resolved that,
subject to the Vestry consenting to pay one-half of the cost of the
formation of the street, it would apply to Parliament for the
necessary powers to carry out the improvement, and also to advance to
the Vestry the amount to be contributed, under the Loans Act, at a
low rate of interest, repayable in about fifty years. The Vestry
agreed to these terms, and the Board applied to Parliament. Accordingly
the Bill was introduced, and is progressing through Parliament.*
METROPOLITAN IMPROVEMENTS.
The new street from Shoreditch to Old Street, part of the great
thoroughfare Shoreditch to Oxford Street, is now in course of execution.
Nearly the whole of the property necessary has been acquired, and the
