Groceries.—171 samples were purchased for Analysis. These represent
14 per cent. of the articles forwarded to the Public Analyst, and of them, only
4, or 2 per cent., were adulterated, as contrasted with 2 per cent. in the preceding
year, 6.7 per cent in 1905 and 9.1 per cent. in 1904.
The results are very satisfactory and show that grocery businesses are now
conducted with more honesty than in the old days, when sugar was sanded
and similar gross frauds were perpetrated on the public.

Spirituous and Alcoholic Liquors.—The total number of samples
taken was 34, of which 5, or 14.7 per cent., were adulterated, as contrasted
with 25.8 in the preceding year.
These samples were only examined as to strength, as it is impossible,
until the Royal Commission on Whiskey and Potable Spirits has reported, to
examine them for the presence of silent spirit.
