Manure Depots.—Owing to the cool summer, these depots were not
visited as frequently as usual. Nevertheless they were inspected on 67
occasions. So far as these places can be kept clean, they were clean, and
indeed they showed an improvement on the preceding year. Compared to
other similar premises of which the Medical Officer of Health has knowledge,
the Islington depots are managed in an orderly manner and create the
minimum of nuisance.
Regent's Canal.—This canal caused no complaints, as its state, partly
owing to atmospheric conditions, and partly to better management, was more
satisfactory than it has been for some years.

Water Certificates.—During the year 16 water certificates were issued
by the Council under Section 48 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
Before these were given it became necessary for the Inspectors to make 90
visits. The granting of these certificates effects a very useful purpose, for it
ensures (a) that the surface pipe shall be buried in the ground to a depth of
2 feet 6 inches ; (b) that where it passes through an open area or through
cellars it shall be amply protected from frost; (c) that a draw-off tap for
dietetic purposes shall be fixed to the main pipe in a suitable position, and
(d) that the storage cistern shall be placed in an easily accessible position, and
shall be of sufficient capacity for the requirements of the people living in
the house.
