MORTUARY AND CORONER'S COURT.
The particulars are as follows:—
Bodies received in Mortuary 740
Inquests held 421
Fees paid for use of Coroner's Court, £38 3s.
The cost of the maintenance of the Mortuary and Coroner's Court
for the year was £142 8s. 7d. As under the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891, the London County Council is bound to provide accommodation
for the holding of inquests some arrangement will no doubt be
come to by which a portion of this expense will in future be borne by
the county.
REGISTRATION OF HOUSES LET IN LODGINGS.
The Sanitary Act of 1866 under which the registration of houses
let in lodgings or occupied by members of more than one family had
been carried out by the local authorities of the metropolis was repealed
by the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, but similar provisions to
those contained in the former were re-enacted in the latter Act, and
the authorities were also authorised to make by-laws for the regulation
of such houses. The by-laws are, as regards Islington, now in course
of compilation. The 300 houses upon the register have been regularly
inspected during the year. Notices were served in cases of non-compliance
with the regulations, but in no instance was it found necessary to
resort to legal proceedings to enforce compliance.
DISORDERLY HOUSES.
Ten warrants were obtained against keepers of disorderly houses
as against one in the previous year, the result of the several prosecutions
being shewn on p. 72.
During the year 48 houses in respect of which complaints had been
received were under surveillance. In the majority of the cases the
premises were vacated on service of a notice threatening proceedings,
while in others the constable who kept observation saw nothing to justify
further steps being taken.
Claims were made upon the Vestry by Mr. H. A. Smith, of 75,
St. Paul's Road, and Mr. Frank Crawley, of 168, St. Paul's Road, for
the informer's fee of £10 each in connection with the prosecution and
conviction of James Smith for keeping a brothel at 69, St. Paul's Road.
The claims were paid.
