The land upon which this establishment is built, about 2½ acres in
extent, cost £6,000. The total cost of the buildings, furniture and
fittings, including the provision of the electric light and commission,
was £33,600.
Whether or not the Baths and Washliouses will prove a financial
success it is too early at present to determine, although the abstract of
accounts published by the Commissioners for the year ended Lady
Day, 1893, a copy of which will be found in the appendix, affords reason
to hope that when once in full working order they will more than pay
the working expenses. It must be borne in mind, however, that the
health and cleanliness of the poorer inhabitants rather than profit
at their expense has been the object of the Commissioners. That the
Baths are a success in every other respect is evidenced from the
manner in which the public have availed themselves of them. During
the 10 months the Caledonian Road establishment has been opened
it has been used by 124,556 bathers and 23,491 washers while the
Hornsey Road establishment during eight months (principally winter
months) has been used by 96,553 bathers and 14,921 washers.
