OPEN SPACES.
In connection with the administration of the Open Spaces Acts
it is satisfactory to note that by a circular dated April, 1892, addressed
by that public spirited body the Metropolitan Open Spaces Association
to the Vestries and District Boards of the metropolis, the action of the
Vestry of Islington is held up as one which it is desirable other local
bodies should follow in their respective districts.
The following have been maintained as open spaces at the undermentioned
expense:—Newington Green, Islington Green, Canonbury
Square Gardens, Barnsbury Square Gardens, Thornhill Gardens, Edward
Square Gardens, and the enclosure in Caledonian Road.

The band of the Workhouse Schools played on several afternoons
during the summer in Newington Green, Islington Green, Canonbury
Square Gardens, Thornhill Gardens and Barnsbury Square Gardens.
The parish Churchyard is also maintained as an open space by the
Churchwardens at the expense of the Vestry under and pursuant to the
Open Spaces Acts.
DUNCAN TERRACE GARDENS.
In April, 1892, the Vestry Clerk reported the proposed sale of this
and other land abutting on City Road by Lord Calthorpe, and a
deputation of inhabitants of the neighbourhood headed by Mr. Richard
Roberts L.C.C. attended the Vestry and presented a memorial urging
the Vestry to prevent the land being sold for building. This memorial
was referred to the Works Committee to deal with. A communication
was subsequently addressed by the Vestry to the Metropolitan Public
Gardens Association suggesting that they should approach Lord
