VESTRY OF
SAINT MARY, ISLINGTON.
Estimates for Rates.
In the preface to the last Estimates, reference was made to the
appeal to Assessment Sessions of the Gras Light and Coke Company
which was then pending, and to the reduction in the Rateable Value
of the Parish, which would result in the event of such appeal
being sustained. Judgment has now been given as regards the
valuation of the Company's undertaking as a whole, and the Court
has also indicated the mode in which the value is to be apportioned
among the several Parishes supplied by the Company. The actual
figures have not been finally settled, but the result will be a very
considerable reduction (about £27,000) in the Company's Assessment
in this Parish upon the figures in the Quinquennial Valuation List,
equivalent to a rate of Id. in the £. The Rates which have been
paid in excess by the Company will now have to be returned,
but as provision has been made in the last two estimates for this
contingency, very little addition to the ordinary requirements of
the Vestry for the ensuing half-year will be needed.
A Rate of a penny in the £, after allowing for losses from empty
property and other causes (about 4.36 per cent.) is estimxted to
produce £6,650 .
