The Vestry, however, did not regard this reply as
satisfactory, and strongly protest against the action
of the Council in giving consent to the buildings in
question without inviting an opinion from the
Vestry.
The Vestry also had their attention called to the
Annual Report of the Corporate Property Committee
of the County Council, in which it is stated
that, as an inducement to builders to take the land
in Rosebery Avenue, the option to purchase the
freehold within a specified time was granted; and
also to a letter of the Council, in which it is stated
that it is hoped that at a later date some arrangement
will be made for developing the sites in
connection with the property in the rear, the lease
of which it is believed expires in about twenty
years; and a letter was sent to the Council,
inviting their observations upon these apparently
conflicting statements.
To which the Yestry received a reply informing
them that the statements do not appear to the
Council to be at variance, inasmuch as the first
statement was not intended to convey the impression
that the Council itself would make
arrangements for developing the sites in connection
with land in rear, but that such arrangements
would probably be made by the owner of the
frontage land; and that the Council has endeavoured,
so far as it legally can, to provide for the
removal of the buildings on the sites at the end of
twenty years, and for the erection of more substantia]
buildings according to plans to be approved,
at a cost of not less than 15s. per foot super.
