managed by a great central body, but by a number of small
bodies. Poor Law Municipalities, and with them the Equalisation
already work without any hindrance. As showing that
the proposals do not tend in the direction of dividing London
into "cities of the rich and parishes of the poor," we may point
out that, of the twenty parishes represented at the deputation,
thirteen of them received £126,320, while the remaining paid to
the fund the sum of £114,256. The population represented by
the deputation amounted to 2,600,413, and the rateable value
£20,638,260; these figures being equivalent to 58 per cent. of
the population and 57.7 of the rateable value of all London,
including the City, the small Schedule A Parishes and the
Schedule B Districts which were not invited to co-operate in the
movement.
Since the above date Parliament has met, and in
the Queen's Speech it was duly announced that
"Her Majesty's Government would introduce a
measure for facilitating the creation of Municipalities
in the Administrative County of London."
Buildings in Rosebery Avenue.—The Vestry
have protested against the County Council approving
the plans of insignificant buildings to be
erected in Rosebery Avenue, opposite the. Town
Hall, and have received a reply pointing out that
every effort has been made to deal with the surplus
land in as satisfactory a manner as possible, which
has been rendered doubly difficult owing to the
shallow depth of the plots. Further, that, having
regard to all the circumstances, no pains have been
spared to induce the Council's lessee to spend the
outlay stipulated for in the agreement in as consistent
a way as possible with the character of the
thoroughfare, and the Committee are of opinion
that the arrangements made will not prove unsatisfactory.
It is hoped that at a later date some
arrangement will be able to be made for developing
the sites in question in connection with the property
at rear, the lease of which, it is believed, expires in
about 20 years.
