than the average. This intra-parochial mortality, calculated on
a population of 66,202, gives a death rate of 14.5 per 1,000,
while the mortality of the year before was 13.9 per 1,000.
From the fact that such a large number of Clerkenwell deaths
occur outside, and are not registered in the parish this iutraparochial
death rate is of no value in comparing ourselves with
surrounding districts. But in comparing the district with itself
at different periods, it is of distinct value, and in 1897 it shows
that the rate of mortality was slightly less satisfactory than in
1896.
The births registered in the district during 1897 were 2,092.
In 1896 they were 2,223. This gives a birth rate of 31.6 per
1,000, the birth rate for London as a whole being 29.9 per 1,000.
The following table gives the births and deaths which
have taken place in the parish in each of the past ten years :—
