REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR 1897.
To the Vestry of St. James and St. John, Clerkenwell.
Gentlemen,—
I have the honour to present my Second Annual Report
upon the sanitary condition of the district of Clerkenwell.
In the report of last year, I pointed out that the difference
between the Census enumeration of our population in 1891 and
that made in 1896 was a loss of only fourteen. For all practical
purposes therefore our population is to be looked upon as
stationary. I have therefore taken as the basis of all birth and
death-rate calculations the number returned in 1896, namely,
66,202
The number of deaths from all causes occurring in Clerkenwell
during the year 1897 is 966. In 1896 the number was 923,
aud the annual average for the past ten years is 1059, so ihat
the deaths are respectively 43 more than last year, and 93 less
