The Right Hon. the Earl of Rosebery, E.G.,
will arrive at the Main Entrance, in Rosebery
Avenue, at 3.50 p.m., and will be received by the
Reception Committee.
His Lordship will be escorted by the Chairman,
the Architect, the Builder, the Members of the
Reception Committee, and Chief Officers over the
Building, arriving in the Council Chamber, where
the following address will be presented :—
Vestry of the Parish of St. James and St. John, Clerkenwell.
Town Hall, Rosebery Avenue, E.C.,
June 14th, 1895.
To the Right Honourable The Earl of Rosebery, K.G.
My Lord,
On behalf of the parishioners of Clerkenwell, the Chairman
and Members of the Vestry beg to offer your Lordship a very
hearty welcome.
The occasion of your Lordship's present visit is the direct
outcome of a ceremony in which you also took a leading part
on the 21st July, 1890, when, as Chairman of the London County
Council, you declared the new thoroughfare in which this Building
is situated open for traffic.
The construction of that thoroughfare, which now bears your
Lordship's name, provided what the Vestry have long been seeking
—a suitable site for commodious municipal buildings in the
centre of the parish,—and the Vestry feel that in asking your
Lordship to honour them by opening this Building to-day, there
is a peculiar appropriateness, a feeling in which they trust your
Lordship shares.
They desire to thank your Lordship for your kindness in so
readily complying with that request, for they hope and believe
that the presence of a statesman so highly distinguished for
service in the municipal affairs of London is a happy augury of
the future usefulness of this Building to the important division
of that great Metropolis for which it has been designed.
Sealed with the Common Seal of the Vestry.
Wm. Robson, Chairman.
R. E. Paget, Vestry Clerk.
