Watering.—The greater part of the watering was done
by the Vestry staff, but on IS days between May 9th and August
18th, an average of 3.15 horses per day were hired from Mr.
Varney for the purpose at a cost of £77 19s. 3d.

The following represents the cost of the watering for the season of 1898, that for 1892 being added for the purpose of comparison:—

Cartage.- The horses and carts have also been employed
during the year in carting stone, refuse from gullies, and rubbish.
Had horses and carts been hired for the purpose a cost of
£211 17s. 10d. would have been incurred.
Horses.—On the 27th June, 1898, the horse "Martin,"
purchased in May, 1880, was destroyed, having become unfit for
further work, and on the 4 th July the horse "Meyer," purchased
in March, 1881, was also destroyed, having also become
unfit for further work. On the 14th July a dapple grey gelding
and a bay mare were purchased in their places, for the sum of
£125, of Mr. Seymour, of Luton. The total number of the stud
remains at 27.
