9429 Loads of Dust at £318 9s. 1d. is equal to 8d. per load
against 7½d. last year, and 10¾ the previous year.
Street Sweepings.—During the year 6642 loads of
street sweepings and dung were removed from the parish, 484
of which were collected on Sunday mornings. 146 freights were
barged away at a cost of £273 14s. 0d. There is a decrease
of 1722 in the number of loads removed, to be largely accounted
for by the prolonged dry season. The Vestry decided, early in
the year, to alter the system of sweeping the streets, and to sweep
them at night instead of in the daytime, and at the same time to
have the sweepings shot direct into barges instead of their being
shot on the wharf and afterwards loaded into the barges. The
change necessitated a contract being made for a constant supply
of barges, and the gross cost of same has therefore considerably
increased, but the increase has been more than met by the saving
in other directions, as the quarterly reports of the Wharf
Superintendent show.
