The original number of trees included in Mr.
Benedict's contract was 88, but two have been removed
from Upper Chadwell Street, and one from
Penton Street, thus reducing the number to 85.
CLEANSING OF STREETS.
Footways—Boy Sweepers.—The gang of boy
sweepers was maintained at the original number,
viz. :—3 boys, with a ganger to each district, until
August 5, when the gangers were dispensed with.
On November 27 a Ganger was appointed to work
the boys in one gang; this system obtained to the
end of the year.
Temporary Sweeping Gang.—In consequence of
the night gang being unable to sweep the subsidiary
streets more than once a week, a gang of 12 men
were employed 6 hours per day from December 13th
to March 17th, at a cost of £90 4s. 9d.
The ordinary night gang remained the same as
the previous year, viz., 22 scavengers and 2 horse
brooms. The number of loads of street sweepings
removed was 6,642, of which 484 were collected on
Sunday mornings. The average number of horses
employed was 10.7 per day, including those with
the brooms. The approximate cost was as
follows:—
