Repairs to Rolling Stock.—The necessity of taking
the wheelwright's shop has resulted in the repairs to the vans
and carts being done by contract, instead of by men employed
direct. The wheelwright employed by the Vestry commenced
business on his own account, and a three years' contract has
been made with him to keep the vehicles in repair for the sum of
of £7 per annum each, The cost for tho year has been £262 1s. 6d.
as compared with £263 6s. 8d. last year. This year's price,
however, includes a proportion for tho four new vans purchased,
so that the actual cost is lower than previously. It is hoped that
tho change will bo to the mutual advantage of the Vestry and
the whoelwright.
Storage for Vans.—It was found that the twelve water
vans, which during the Winter stood under the dustshed, took up
more room than could conveniently be spared, and the addition of
four new dust vans compelled the Vestry to seek for more storage
room, An advantageous site has been secured, on lease, in
Rponcor Place, and a shod has been erected in which the vans
can be stored, and much additional space has been thereby
obtained at tho Wharf.
Cartage.—The horses and carts have also been employed
during the year in carting stone, refuse from 860 gullies, and
rubbish. For cartage purposes, horses, carts and men have been
hired during tho year from Mr. Varnoy, at a cost of £31 10s. Od.
Vans aud Carts.—Four vans have been purchased at
a cost of £50 each. The number of vans and carts belonging
to the Vestry is—20 vans, 8 carts, 12 water vans, and 2 sweeping
machines.
Fodder.—Tho Fodder account amounts to £1158 1s. 8d.,
boing an avorage of 17s. 6d. per horse per week, an increase
from last year of 1s. 5d. per horse per weok. This increase has
been caused by an advance in tho price of fodder, especially of hay
and clover; tho average price of hay being 80s. 9d. per load
against 74s. 9d. in the previous year; of clover 101s. 6d. against
88s.; of straw 35s. against 82s. 8d.; and of oats 21s. 6d. per
quarter against 21s. 4d.
