A largely increased charge will be noticed for Repairs of
Vans. This may be accounted for by the fact that for 1891, the
actual cost of these Vans is recorded, while for 1892, a proportion
of the contract for the whole of the rolling stock, viz., £7 per
van for twelve vans, is charged. The extra number of days on
which watering was done, and the increase of 1,094,000 in the
number of gallons of water used, point to a much drier season in
1892 than in 1891. Four additional horses have been purchased
with the view of reducing the large annual charge for hired
horses.
Horses.—On the 5th April, 1892, the horse "Dore," bought
in 1880, and the horse "Finigan,' bought in 1889, were sold,
having become unfit for the Vestry's work. On August 9th, the
horse "Batchelder," bought in 1880, broke a blood vessel while
at work in Compton Street, and died in a short time ; and on the
13th September, the horse "Brailey," also bought in 1880, was
destroyed, having become unfit for further work. To replace
these four, and to provide others to reduce the cost of hiring,
eight horses have been purchased during the year as follows:—
one on April 26th, one on April 28th, two on July 20th, and four
on September 13th. The enlargement of the stud of horses
necessitated a corresponding enlargement of the stable accommodation;
the wheelwright's shop was therefore converted into a
five-stall stable at a cost of £106 14s. 7d,
