Watering.—The watering was done mainly by the Vestry's
staff, but for 51 days an average of 4.16 horses per day were hired
from Mr. Varney for the purpose; the exceptionally cool and wet
summer necessitating hiring for 46 days less than in 1887.
Cartage.—The horses and carts have also been employed during
the year in carting stone, refuse from 460 gullies, sewer refuse
(7 loads), and 42 loads of rubbish, the cost of which would have
amounted to £102 12s. 8d., if the Vestry had to hire horses,
carts and men for the purpose, at say 12s. 6d. per day.
Horses.—One horse was killed on the 9th December. No
horses have been purchased during the year, the number at the close
of the year being 19.
Vans and Carts.—The number of vans and carts belonging
to the Vestry is—12 vans, 8 carts, and 12 water vans.
Fodder.—The Fodder account amounts to £781 8s , being an
average of 15s. 2d. per horse per week, an increase from last year
of 4d. per horse per week.
