of same were accordingly served on the Marquis
Northampton, Mr. Lewis Thomas, Mr. S. Wenkheim
and the executors of Mr. Tammadge, the owners
and leaseholders of the property, and notice was
given to them that the Vestry would proceed to
consider same on the 4th October. Letters were
in the meantime received from the Marquis
Northampton and Mr. Wenkheim, stating that
they would offer no opposition. The executors of
Mr. Tammadge appeared by Mr. Mote, their solicitor,
and offered objections, and Mr. Thomas also
was present, but stated that he was not prepared
to urge any objections at the present moment.
After hearing the objections, the Vestry adjourned
the consideration of a motion that the houses be
demolished for three months.
Electric Lighting.—In July, 1888, communications
were laid before the Vestry from the London
Electric Supply Corporation, the South Metropolitan
Electric Supply Company and Messrs. W.
T. Glover & Co., giving notice of their intention to
apply for Provisional Orders to supply Electricity
in the Parish of Clerkenwell, which were duly
referred to the Works Committee for consideration
and report. Messrs. Glover & Co., however took
no further steps towards obtaining such an order.
In due course the Committee had before them
Lord Crawford, Chairman, and Mr. Medcalfe,
Solicitor of the London Electric Supply Corporation,
and Mr. Bircham, Solicitor of the Metropolitan
Electric Supply Company, on the subject. Having
carefully considered the schemes, the Vestry were
of opinion that it was desirable that encouragement
should be given to the development of Electric
Lighting, and with the view of obtaining all possible
benefit to the public from the competition of the
two companies, gave their assent to both schemes,
subject only to the condition that they should
