Street Sweepings.—During the year, 4,520 loads of street
sweepings were removed from the Parish, 313 of which were collected
on Sunday mornings, 138 freights were disposed of, 121 being
sold for £1 each, 1 for 10s., and 16 being removed free.
Watering.—The watering was done mainly by the Vestry's
staff, but for 97 days an average of nearly 5 horses per day were
hired from Mr. Stubbs and Mr. Varney for the purpose; the exceptionally
hot and dry summer necessitating hiring for 25 days more
than in 1886.
Cartage.—The horses and carts have also been employed
during the year in carting stone, refuse from 339 gullies, sewer
refuse (7 loads), and 50J loads of rubbish, the cost of which would
have amounted to £144, if the Vestry had to hire horses, carts and
men for the purpose, at say 12s. 6d. per day.
Horses.—The Committee are glad to be able to report that
none of the horses in the Vestry's employment died during the year.
Four additional horses were purchased during the year, on April
5th, May 20 th, May 29th, and September 15 th, raising the stud
from 16 to 20.
Vans and Carts—The number of Vans and Carts at the
close of the year, was 12 vans, 8 carts, and 12 water vans. Four old
carts were sold at the commencement of the year for £9 10s. The
wheelwright has constructed one new van daring the year.
Fodder.—The fodder account amounts to £748 8s. 5d., being
an average of 14s. 10d. per horse per week—a_reducfron from last
year of 1s. per horse per week.
