thoroughfare from the Holborn Town Hall to near the " Angel" at
Islington.
The Vestry is doubtless aware of the severe restrictions to which
the Board are subjected by the statute with respect to the removal
of the habitations of persons of the labouring class in this improvement,
and thut these restrictions necessarily delay the carrying out
of the work.
I am directed to state, however, for the information of the Vestry,
that, with regard to the first section of the improvement, namely,
from Clerkenwell Road to Farringdon Street, the new dwellings
required to enable the necessary accommodation to be provided are
now in course of erection, and that upon their completion the Board
will be in a position to proceed with the formation of this portion of
the new thoroughfare.
With regard to the remaining section of the improvement, from
Exmouth Street to St. John Street Road, I am to state that a scheme
for rehousing artizans who will be displaced is about to be prepared
and submitted to the Secretary ot State.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
J. E. WAKEFIELD,
Clerk of the Board,
The Clerk of the Vestry of Clerkenwell.
The Vestry thereupon resolved that a Memorial
be presented to the Home Secretary, pointing out
the delay which has occured in carrying out the
proposed New Street from the Holborn Town
Hall to the Angel, and urging upon Mr.
Matthews the necessity of permitting modifications
of the restrictions imposed by the statute
upon the Metropolitan Board of Works with respect
fo the housing of the working classes, as such
relaxation of the law by the Secretary of State,
who is armed in the matter with full discretionary
powers, would result in the immediate carrying
out of a much needed public improvement, and
lead to the employment of a large number of the
artizan and labouring class now out of work.
They also resolved that a copy of such Memorial
be forwarded to the Metropolitan Board of Works
for their information.
