New Street from Holborn Town Hall
to the "Angel."—On the 17th November a
frer—a question was asked of Mr. Robson, the
Member of the Metropolitan Board of Works, if
there was likely to be any alteration in the proposed
route of the new street from the Holborn Town
Hall to the " Angel," and when the second section
of the street will be proceeded with.
Mr. Robson replied, that the Metropolitan
Board's Various Powers Act, 1885, prohibited
the Board from completing the purchase of houses
wholly or partially occupied by the labouring
classes, until they had obtained the Home Secretary's
approval to their scheme for re-housing the
industrial classes displaced. At present the Home
Secretary had only approved of the provision made
for housing the working classes to the south west
of Farringdon Road, and until he approved of the
Board's scheme for the rest of the improvement,
they were practically precluded from purchasing
any more property, hence the Board asked for two
years' extension in which to complete the improvement.
The Vestry thereupon decided to send a strong
letter to the Metropolitan Board of Works,
expressing the regret of the Vestry at the Board's
intention to seek an extension of time, and urging
upon them the necessity of .completing the improvement
with all possible speed.
At the Meeting on the 15th December, the
following letter was read :—
