So that the intraparochial mortality for the year has been
18.8; including the hospital deaths, 20; and the Workhouse
and Infirmary deaths, 22 per 1,000.
Hence the mortality of the year has been somewhat above
that of the preceding year.
The mortality for all London during the year was 20.3; that
of the West Districts, 19.2; of the North Districts, 19.1; of the
Central Districts, 23.8; of the East Districts, 23.0; and of the
South Districts, 19.8.
So that Clerkenwell still keeps its place at the head of its own
group of crowded Central Districts, and of the East Districts
with their far less crowded population; and it must not be
forgotten that the population to an acre exerts a great influence
upon the mortality of a parish or district.
But the estimation of the true mortality of a parish or district
is a very difficult matter. If the population consists mainly of
the working and poorer classes, the mortality will surely be in
comparative excess. Moreover, the erratic character of this
population may transfer many deaths to a parish, the cause of
which has been acquired in some other parish.
Again, the omission of the extraparochial and even extrametropolitan
deaths gives a parish or group of parishes a
smaller mortality than really belongs to them, and these deaths
are not included in the "Mortality for all London" quoted
above ; while those belonging to Clerkenwell are included in
my estimate ; and this makes the comparative mortality appear
higher than it really is. Moreover, there are 53 weeks in the
Registration year of 1884.
The number of deaths arising from the principal Zymotic
diseases in the parish in 1884 was 236, being 21 more than in
the preceding year. The number and the causes of the zymotic
deaths occurring in Clerkenwell during the last 10 years are
exhibited in the following Table-

The accompanying table exhibits the number of deaths which have taken place in the Parish in each of the last 10 years, the births in each year being placed opposite: —
