Milk Shops.
The number of premises where milk is sold was 139 at
the end of 1919. 387 inspections were made, and 15 notices
were served to remedy insanitary conditions found on inspection,
all of which were complied with.
The character of the business carried on in premises in
which milk is sold in Battersea during 1919 was as follows:—
Dairy produce only 64
General shops 55
Confectioners 11
Dwelling-houses 7
Wholesale 2
Total 139
The number of general shops in which milk is sold has
been greatly reduced in recent years. Registration is refused
in all cases where the premises for any reason are unsuitable
for the sale of milk, and efforts are made to confine the sale
of this article as far as possible to premises for the sale of
dairy produce only.
Restaurant Kitchens.
The total number of restaurants and eating-houses on the
register at the end of 1919 was 94. They were kept under
systematic inspection during the year. It was found necessary
to serve notices to remedy 23 defects found on inspection.
Fish Shops.
There are G2 premises in the Borough in which fish is sold.
In 41 of these premises fried fish is sold; in 3 others a fishcuring
business is also carried on, and 8 are businesses where
fish-curing for sale on the premises is carried on.
These premises were systematically inspected during the
year. 120 inspections were made, and notices were served to
remedy 28 more or less serious insanitary conditions found on
inspection.
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.
During 1919 1,000 samples were taken for analysis within
the Borough of Battersea. Of these 1,000 samples, 66 (i.e.,
6.6 per cent.) were certified to be adulterated. Five samples
were certified to be of inferior quality.
