As was to be expected, owing to the scarcity and high
price of milk, very considerable use was made of the powers
conveyed in the new orders. A scale of charges, based on the
family income and number in family, was drawn up by the
Medical Officer of Health to serve as a rough guide, and was
approved by the Health and Maternity and Child Welfare
Committees. The scale is as follows:—
Free milk—
Income not exceeding
29s. per week for man and wife.
6s. for first child.
3s. for each succeeding child.
Half-price—
Incomes under
35s. for man and wife.
10s. for first child.
5s. for each succeeding child.
Cost price—
Incomes under £3 per week for man and wife and
one child.
Copies of the handbill and circular letter referred to and
of the form of application in use for the supply of dried milk
are as follows:—
Battersea Borough Council.
Milk for Expectant and Nursing Mothers.
Owing to the increase in the price of milk, arrangements
are now being made to provide facilities for the issue of a
supply of milk to nursing and expectant mothers who are
likely to be unable to obtain sufficient milk.
Arrangements can also be made to ensure a supply of
milk in the case of children under school age.
