deaths are to be deducted; but, on the other hand, there are
382 deaths of Battersea residents registered outside the
Borough. These must be added, giving a corrected number
of deaths for Battersea during 1919 of 2,061, and a nett
corrected death-rate of 129 per 1,000 population as compared
with 13.6 for London.
Subdividing the death-rate amongst the three registration
sub-districts, it will be noted that the rates have been
fairly uniform in each of the sub-districts. It is noteworthy,
however, that South-West Battersea shows a higher deathrate
than either of the other two sub-districts. This SouthWest
sub-district, heretofore, was inhabited, in the main, by
a more prosperous class of resident; but it is apparent that
a change is taking place in the character of the sub-district,
and to this cause, to some extent at least, the increased
mortality rate recorded in South-West Battersea during the
year 1919 may be attributable.
The following table shows the death-rates per 1,000 of
the population for the Borough and the sub-districts for the
ten years, 1909-1918 and the year 1919, respectively:—
