1777 (informal) Bread and butter 'Consisted of bread spread with p mixture of butter and margarine, the proportion of butter in the mixture being not more than 60%.
Cafe proprietor warned. He undertook to use butter only in future.
1774 (informal) Bronchial mixtureContained only 0.85% v/v of chloroform instead of the 2.5% declared on the label.
Warning given. Manufacturers agreed that there should not have been so great a loss in chloroform content. They were taking active steps to ensure that both at time of manufacture and packing chloroform is adequately dispersed and present in full strength.
1775 (informal) Condensed milkDiscoloured and thickened due to ageing effect. Not unfit for consumption, but unfit for sale.

Dealer informed.
There was one prosecution for selling to the prejudice of the
purchaser a loaf of bread which was not of the substance demanded
in that it contained insect webbing etc. A fine of £20. was
imposed and the Council awarded £7.15.0. costs.
A local butcher was given a warning after due consideration
by the Public Health Committee for selling minced meat containing
a piece of bandage.
