CRECHE.—During the year a step in advance was taken in
another direction. For 12 years a voluntary organisation, originating
with certain ladies attached to St. John's Church, Stamford Hill,
carried on a day nursery a' Fladbury Road—that is, in the centre of
one of the most densely populated areas in Tottenham. From small
beginnings this creche grew to considerable dimensions, so that two
houses had to be united to accommodate the 50 or more children
for whom admission was sought daily by their mothers, who were,
perforce, obliged to go to work.
The Board of Education had supported this voluntary scheme
by generous grants, but the limited kitchen accommodation was taken
exception to, and the Council was approached with a view of their
including the Creche within their Maternity and Child Welfare scheme.
Arrangements were come to whereby this was done and after
prolonged negotiations, suitable premises were found for the Creche at
240, St. Ann's Road. This is a large dwelling-house situated at no
great distance from the Fladbury Road Creche (which is now closed)
and standing in a garden of considerable dimensions.
