Co-ordination.
There is intimate connection between the general Health
Services, as will be noted from the fact that the Medical Officer
of Health and his Assistant are the School and Assistant
School Medical Officers respectively.
The School Medical Service in relation to Public Elementary
Schools.
School Hygiene.
The condition of the schools is of a fair average standard.
The attention of the Committee was, however, drawn to
the type of desks in the Haydon's Road Girls' School, where
the lighting was also defective. Action has already been
taken with a view to remedying these defects.
There is ample water supply both for washing and drinking
purposes.
Medical Inspection.
The age groups examined have been 5 years, 8 to 9 years
and 12 years, besides which medical inspection was undertaken
twice of all the children in the classes with a view to ascertaining
any defects in those who did not underg'o examination
at the Routine Medical Inspection. Any abnormalities
noted by the teachers were sent for special examination to the
School Clinic.
Findings of Medical Inspection and Treatment.
Uncleanliness.
Most schools were specially visited weekly as to uncleanliness
of the children. All found with vermin and a large
number of nits were excluded for varying periods. Some of
the cases were treated at the Cleansing Department of the
Clinic. 100 were cleansed and returned to school.
Minor Ailments.
The Clinic was open every morning during the school
sessions. Parents have attended in large numbers and children
found to have more serious defects have been referred for
further appropriate treatment.
Tonsils and Adenoids.
Arrangements were made with the two local hospitals for
treatment of these cases. Patients were sent with a form to
the hospital and were treated in turn. A charge was madp
according to the means of the patient, and the balance was
defrayed by the Committee.
