1,000 living. This recorded death-rate on being corrected for age and
sex distribution is raised to 21.1 per 1,000, the corresponding rate for
the year 1899 being 21 -8 per 1,000.

I give below the deaths occurring in the four registration sub-districts, together with particulars as to area, inhabited houses, ami population culled from the 1901 Preliminary Census Abstract:—

Deaths in specially selected Areas.—It will be remembered
that in 1897 I selected certain districts in which I obtained a
fairly accurate population by a personal canvass, since when I have
been enabled to record the death-rates in those areas, thus comparing
the poorer with the wealthier districts. Four years having passed, I
have, with the assistance of the Health Visitors, again made a personal
canvass of most of the selected areas. The Woodgrange area has not
been checked, as its population is comparatively stationary, and apart
from a slight excess of births over deaths, otters little opportunity of
growth. The Stratford Marsh area has been withdrawn from the
group under consideration, owing to the fact that several of the houses
are closed, and the whole area will shortly be rebuilt by your Council,
under the Housing of the Working Classes Act. I append herewith the
particulars of the other districts as they show certain variations when
