Deaths.—The total deaths of West Ham during the year,
numbered 4,486. These included 3,964 registered in the Borough by
the District Registrars (from which 57 must be deducted as being
deaths of non-residents), 306 registered as occurring in the Workhouse,
and 273 deaths of West Ham inhabitants, which took place in hospitals
and other institutions within the Metropolis. This number of deaths
is 91 less than that of last year. Estimating the population at
264,216, this gives a recorded death-rate of 16.9 per 1,000. The
factor for correction for sex and age distribution, calculated by the
Registrar-General, for West Ham is 1 '0788, which gives a corrected
death-rate for the year 1897, of 18.2 per 1,000. The corrected deathrate
of London was 193 per 1,000, and the West Ham rate was lower
