Meteorology.—The centre of the Borough being about 3½
miles north of Greenwich Observatory, the meteorological observations.
recorded there may be taken as fairly representing the weather conditions
of West Ham. The table below is a compilation from the
weekly reports of observations at Greenwich under the superintendance
of the Astronomer Royal. From this it may be gathered that the
mean temperature of the year was 50.3°, being 1° above the average
of the last 50 years. The hottest day was Midsummer Day, when the
temperature rose to 90.2°, and the coldest day was Christmas Eve,
when it fell to 23.3°.
Rain fell on 167 days, the total rainfall being 22.13 inches.
The registered sunshine for the whole year amounted to 1,534 hours,
being 517 hours more than that registered in 1896.

The most noticeable feature during the year was the disastrous tornado which swept over 100 square miles of Essex on June 24th.
