The following table shows how the population in 1901 was
made up, according to age, compared with England and Wales,
and the average death.rate for the different ages throughout
the country:—

It will be noticed that for the age groups under 15 years and between
25 and 45 years our population is in excess of that of the country as a
whole, and for the groups, 45 years and upwards, considerably less.
As the death-rates in the latter are considerably greater than at other
age periods with a proportionately smaller number of such lives, ceteris
paribus, our death-rate would be less than in places not similarly
constituted. For the purpose of correcting such errors, the Registrar.
General has calculated a factor for all large towns by which the recorded
or general death-rate is multiplied to arrive at the corrected, or the rate
upon which comparisons are based.
In this district, owing to age and sex distribution, the corrected
exceeds the general death-rate by -55 per 1,000.
