Ice Cream Vendors.—Although we have in Walthamstow no
special powers, such as are in force in London and some provincial
towns, for dealing with these premises, we have, especially in hot
weather, inspected them to the number of 108, especially with
reference to the conditions under which the article is manufactured.
These premises have been inspected as to their sanitary conditions,
and the vessels in which the ice cream is prepared examined as to
their cleanliness. In one case it was found necessary to have the
business discontinued owing to the unsuitablity of the premises,
and in another case an entire renovation and rearrangement was
secured.
The following improvements have been effected :—
Offensive Trades.—There now remains only one premises in
the category of "Offensive Trades" in the district, viz., that
carried on at Manor Farm, Billet Road, consisting of fat extraction
in connection with pig keeping. We are fortunate in having been
relieved of the serious nuisance arising from the similar business at
St. John's Farm, Chapel End, by its removal to the other end of
the county, and no one more rejoices at this fact than your
Inspector of Nuisances.
Under the provisions of the Public Health Acts Amendment
Act, 1907, the Council have power, with the sanction of the Local
Government Board, to make regulations for the supervision of any
trade which it may be deemed advisable to include in the list of
offensive trades, and I would suggest that the cooking of kitchen
waste, marine store dealing, and fish curing might usefully be so
included.
Elementary Schools.—The schools of the district have been
inspected for the discovery of any matter which may exist affecting
their sanitary condition, and a list of the defects found has been
