Slaughterhouses and Meat Inspection.
There are five registered Slaughterhouses in use in the
thorough. Frequent inspections of the premises have been
made.
All the premises are old, but they have been kept in a
clean condition. There are very few animals slaughtered
locally. The greater portion of the meat sold in the district
-comes direct from the Abattoirs and wholesale markets in
London.
The Sanitary Inspector and the Assistant Sanitary
Inspector both hold certificates qualifying them to act as
Inspectors of Meat and other foods.
Bakehouses.
The number of Bakehouses on the register at the end of
the year was 25, six of these being underground.
All the bakehouses were frequently inspected during the
year, and the usual standard of cleanliness was well maintained.
In addition, systematic inspections have been made of the
public dining rooms, restaurants, kitchens, fried fish shops and
the food supplies found therein.
The food supplies on the street hawkers' carts and barrows
were also examined from time to time.
Disposal of Carbage and Trade Refuse.
There has been considerable improvement during the past
year in the removal and disposal of garbage and trade refuse
from shopkeepers premises. The warnings given during the
previous year have had good effect, and the removal contractors
have cleared the refuse regularly, twice, and, during the
summer months, three times weekly, from the various fish,
meat and greengrocers' premises in the Borough.
At the majority of fish shops, the contractors provide the
shopkeeper with sealed pails for the reception of the offal.
