SECTION I
VITAL STATISTICS.
Population.
The population of the Borough at the middle of
the year 1906 was estimated by the Registrar
General as 34,358. The increase during the decade 1891-1901 was
from 26,875 to 31,677, a total of 4,802.
The method of estimating the population is to assume that the
population has gone on increasing since 1901 at the same ratio as
during the preceding decade. Obviously this is open to several
errors.
The estimated population of the Borough as given by the
Registrar General, is probably somewhat in excess of what actually
exists. The Borough Accountant has kindly supplied the following
particulars, taken from the Rate Books:—
Number of houses at census, 1901 (including 54
building) 6514
Erected since, to 30th June, 1906 561
7075
Empty houses, June, 1906 429
Number of inhabited houses, June, 1906 6646
At the last Census there was an average of 5.1 persons per
house, and assuming the same average per house in 1906, the above
shows a population of 33,894 or 464 less than that given by the
Registrar General.
