Old Maiden.
Idmiston Road—Nos. 2 and 5.
Worcester Park—"Elm Lodge."
Proper galvanised iron sanitary dust-bins have been provided
where required; the yards at the rear for a reasonable distance paved
with impervious material, having a fall to a properly trapped gully
connected to the drains, so as to take away all rain and other waste
waters from the immediate neighbourhood of the back door and
windows, the sanitary fittings, drainage, etc., examined and remedied
where defective, not to mention many sanitary improvements inside
the houses, such as new sinks, sink waste-pipes, new or repaired
floors, and the repair, cleansing, etc., of walls, ceilings, and roofs.
In no case was admittance to premises for purposes of inspection
refused during the year.
I have found in the inspection of cottages and the consequent
carrying out of work as many as five and six old papers cm the
walls, the result of the owners obtaining a little saving in the cost
of properly stripping the walls before papering. This can only be
described as a very insanitary and dirty way of carrying out this
class of work, moreover it is a practice not confined to the smaller
properties only, for it can be found in quite better class houses. It is
a great pity this practice was not included as one of the nuisances
in the amended nuisances clauses of Part 3 of the Public Health
Acts Amendment Act, 1907, for it is quite as important as defective
drainage.
