It will be noticed that in 1% of cases the hearing was classed
as "fair," and in 0.5% the hearing is classed as " bad." I need
hardly point out how defective hearing interferes with a child's
progress in life, and how important it is that these children should
have the condition treated. A certain number of these cases may
be due to "wax," and a certain proportion to adenoids, but the
more serious and the most untractable is that due to middle-ear
disease, which was present in .5% of cases examined at routine
inspection and in 26 special cases referred by teachers, etc.
Heart and Circulation.
No case of organic heart-disease was detected. In all such
cases, the teacher, as well as the parent, is duly notified of the
condition and appropriate advice given regarding the child's life in
school.
Murmurs and irregularities were detected in 60 other cases
on auscultation, which were probably functional in origin.
Anaemia was diagnosed in 9 instances.
(Special Cases:—Heart-disease, 93; Anaemia, 17).
Lung Conditions.
In 1755 examinations 9 cases of Bronchitis and Bronchial
Catarrh were discovered; no children were definitely diagnosed as
suffering from Pulmonary Tuberculosis; but in 4 instances children
were classed as Pretubercular, or "Suspicious"; while 12 other
children were suffering from other diseases of the lungs.
(Special Cases:—Bronchial Catarrh, 2; Pulmonary Tuberculosis,
19; Pretubercular or "Suspicious," 18; other Disease of Lungs, 68).
Other Tubercular Diseases.
No children were found to be suffering from other forms of
Tuberculosis.
(Special Cases:—Tubercular Disease, 4).
Skin Diseases.
During Routine Inspection of 1755 children, 17 were found
to be suffering from some skin disease. Ringworm of the body or
head was found in 3 instances. Impetigo was present in 2 cases.
Other skin diseases were detected in 12 other children.
