BAKEHOUSE, FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS.
There are 350 factories and workshops, excluding outworkers.
These factories include bakehouses, laundries, blousemakers,
tailors, boot-repairers, shirtmakers, artificial flower makers, etc.
During the year 598 inspections have been made, including 156 factories,
84 bakehouses, and 358 out-workers. The Inspectors' attention is
chiefly devoted to the ventilation of workrooms and workshops, also
to sanitary appliances and accommodation. The Chief Factory Inspector
has on 9 occasions informed us of irregularities in factories or workshops
discovered by the Home Office Inspectors when discharging their
duties and the Chief Factory Inspector has been informed of anything
discovered by our Inspectors that come within his province.
DAIRIES AND COWSHEDS.
There are 11 registered cowsheds and 198 registered dairies
in the Borough. During the year, 186 inspections have been
made. The premises are usually found in a satisfactory condition.
The provisions of the dairies and cowsheds regulations
have been complied with. In dairies the principal cause of trouble
is dirty utensils, whilst in cowsheds it is the dirty surroundings,
which frequently include the milker; but in reviewing past years
it is gratifying to note that there has been a decided improvement
in cleanliness and purity of the milk supplied, but there yet remains
much to be done.
SLAUGHTERHOUSES.
There are 13 slaughterhouses in the Borough. 150 inspections
have been made, as compared with 320 for the previous
year. This falling off is due to the fact that a particular
slaughterhouse, where 188 inspections were made in 1918, was
closed during the greater part of the year 1919. From this
slaughterhouse important seizures of unsound and diseased meat,
referred to again under the heading of Unsound Food, had been
made. The provisions of the Council's byelaws, viz., limewashing
and cleansing, have been carried out.
