TEMPORARY BUILDINGS.
The erection of temporary structures at rear of premises
contrary to Bye-laws is a common practice. Many of these buildings
impede light and ventilation, and sometimes encase the
drain. All breaches of Byelaws are reported to the Borough
Engineer and the buildings inspected by a Sub-Committee, and
where proved to be a nuisance their removal ordered.
SCHOOLS.
The Public and Elementary Schools have been inspected by
the District Inspectors. Special attention is given to drains,
gullies, urinals, Latrines, etc. In most of the schools the work of
cleansing the sanitary conveniences is satisfactorily done.
OFFENSIVE TRADES.
There are two businesses situate in Langdon Crescent, Wall
End, which come within the meaning of this designation. The
work consists of gut scraping and ox-gut trimming. Constant
attention is given by the District Inspector, and no complaints
have been received. The Council were very reluctant, and
rightly so, in sanctioning the establishment of the business, but
the firm has proved that the business of gut scraping can be performed
without being a nuisance. Speaking from experience, one
can say that there are frequently more odours given off from the
pan of a fried-fish shop than from what is called an offensive
trade.
The collection of butchers' bones and fish offal is carried
out by private contractors, and in the summer months is
frequently the cause of much annoyance. Fish offal is usually
collected late at niight, but the bone and fat collector invariably
selects a time when the maximum amount of annoyance can be
caused. The nature of the work is disagreeable, and allowance
should be made, but if common sense is applied to the work
and suitable vans and receptacles used there is little, if
any, nuisance.
COMMON LODGING HOUSES.
There is only one common lodging house in the Borough,
situated in Albert Road, North Woolwich. It is regularly visited
and on no occasion has it been necessary to serve any Notice or
complain of nuisance.
There is accommodation for 42 beds on the premises.
