6
COUNTY BOROUGH OF EAST HAM.
PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
For the year 1918.
VITAL STATISTICS.
POPULATION.
The population of the Borough at the Census of 1911 was
133,487.
The estimated population, based on rationing statistics at
the middle of 1917, was 131,008.
It is necessary for the present to continue the use of the
estimate of population as in 1917, because that for 1918, although
it might now be used, would necessarily differ more from the facts
of tihe present time than the earlier estimate. The main change
which occurred between mid-1917 and mid-1918 was further
depletion of the male civilian population by enlistment, and as
this has now been more than made good by demobilisation, it
follows that tihe 1917 estimate, though it understates the present
population, does so to a less extent than would that for 1918.
BIRTHS.
During fhe year 2,205 births were registered (males 1,149,
females 1,056) as against 2,634 in 1917, giving a birth-rate oi
15"3 per 1,000 population.
Illegitimate Births.
Forty-nine of these were registered.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths during tihe year was 1,943, of which
201 were of persons of 65 years and upwards.
458 deaths were reported of persons belonging to the Borough
which had taken place in Institutions outside the district.
