PUBLIC HOUSES.
There are 87 licensed houses, consisting of 25 ale houses, 9
beer houses, and 53 off-licenses. There have been no proceedings
against any proprietor during the year.
PUBLIC URINALS.
There are 12 public conveniences in the Borough for men, but
the accommodation for women is still unsatisfactory, and is under
consideration by a Special Committee of the Council. The urinals
were inspected periodically, and found to be kept in a most satisfactory
manner.
REFUSE REMOVAL.
The collection of house refuse is still carried out by contract
once weekly.
Where a dust bin is not provided a Notice is served upon the
Owner to provide.
During the year a number of complaints were received about
men causing a nuisance by turning the refuse over in the dust
bins on to the forecourt, the police were notified, and the nuisance
thus caused has diminished.
The refuse is carted to the Destructor which adjoins the
Sewage Disposal Works. The Destructor contains 2 units of 3
cells each, Meldrum's "Simplex" front-feed. The heat of combustion
is applied to the generation of steam required for the
Works. The units are worked alternately, one working whilst
the other is being cleared. The weight of refuse destroyed daily
is from 50 to 60 tons.
