Enlarged Tonsils and Adenoids.
8'9 per cent, of the boys and 9.3 per cent, of the girls had
slightly enlarged tonsils, and 1.7 per cent, boys and 1.9 per cent,
girls had tonsils that were much enlarged.
The percentages of children affected with post-nasal adenoids
were 5.5 and 5.9 for boys and girls respectively.
Many of the cases were advised to have operative treatment.
Not infrequently parents have asked if their childrens'
throats needed attention, thus showing that the people generally
are becoming educated as to the importance of post-nasal
obstruction and enlarged tonsils.
Mental Defects.
Of the boys and girls examined at Routine Medical Inspection,
10 per cent, of the boys and 12.9 per cent of the girls were
considered dull.
14 children were found to be mentally deficient.
The coming into force of the Mental Deficiency Act, 1913,
will in future require greater attention being paid to this subject.
The duties laid upon local Education Authorities have already
been mentioned on page 83.
It is hoped that by the adoption of the scheme of examination
recommended by the Board and the employment of the tests
of Binet and Simon, the result will become more uniform
throughout the country.
