She visits the parents of those children who are found at
the medical inspection to have any physical defects and ascertains
whether medical advice or treatment has been obtained.
During the past year, Nurse Kay paid 940 visits to homes of
children suffering from different ailments. There was a large
number of cases and it was found impossible to visit as often as
needed, but now a second Nurse has been appointed more will
be done.
She has brought a large number of cases for me to see at my
office that were kept out of school (causing a needless loss of
grant) owing to minor ailments which might soon be remedied
by proper treatment.
Diseases and Defects found which have been remedied.—
It is one thing to discover a defect, but quite another to see
that defect remedied, yet if treatment is not obtained, the money
expended in Medical Inspection is wasted. There is no doubt
that there are a great many people in this district who cannot
afford to pay for necessary treatment when ordered.
I, myself, have given parents a letter for a hospital, and
have been told that they could not afford the expense of the
journey. It is for these cases I should suggest to your
Committee that permission be asked from the Board of
Education that we may be able to treat or assist. I have found
cases, for instance, where glasses were ordered for defective
vision, the parents being unable to purchase them, much to the
detriment of the child.
DISEASES AND DEFECTS FOUND ON
EXAMINATION, WHICH HAVE BEEN
TREATED.
Where defects are found during the Medical Inspection, a
notice is sent to the parents notifying them and asking them
to take the child with the notice to their Medical man.
