WARD DENSITY OF POPULATION.
The area of the Borough excluding Inland Water is 3,326
acres. The estimated population at the middle of the year
being 156,208, gives an average density of 46^9 persons per
acre.
The number of persons at the census of 1901 was 33 per
acre. The density of the population in the different Wards
varies considerably, depending chiefly on the open spaces and
undeveloped land.

BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the Borough
during the year was 3,455. Of these 1,756 were boys and 1,699
girls, giving a rate of only 22.1 per 1,000 of population.
The birth-rate of England and Wales for the year was
24-8 per 1,000, whilst the average rate for the 77 large towns
was 25-0 per 1,000.
