DIPHTHERIA.
The number of cases notified during the year was 142 as
compared with 271 during the previous year. The number of
deaths was 13, which gives a death.rate of 9.1 percent., as compared
with 24 deaths and a death.rate of 8.8 per cent, during
the yrar 1909.
The Wards in which the disease was most prevalent were
Manor Park, Central Ward East, and Plashet Ward West. In
Plashet Ward West six of the cases were contact cases.
The Bacteriological Laboratory has, in my opinion, been
lesponsible for the diminution of cases and for the low death.
rate in discovering early cases as well as contacts. The free
supply of Antitoxine to Medical practitioners is still continued,
and this also, no doubt, is responsible in keeping down the
death.rate.
The death.rate from Diphtheria was equal to 0.08 per
1,000 of population compared with 0.16 during the previous
year. The rate for England Wales was 0.11, and the average
rate for the 77 Great Towns was 0.11 per 1,000 of population.

The following Table gives the number of cases notified, attack.rate per 1,000 of population, and the mortality percent, during the past five years:—
