In connection with the sufficiency and suitability of the
Sanitary accommodation in workshops, etc., the standard
required in the Borough is one w.c. to 25 persons.
During the year in one workshop employing about 50
hands and engaged in the manufacture of delicate wearing
apparel, ornamented with fancy bead-work, etc., a case of
Scarlet Fever occurred. Disinfection of the work handled by
this employee was carried out, but in a few days another case
of the disease occurred. Both attacks were very severe in
nature, and one proved fatal. With the ready consent and
co-operation of the owner, and without any legal formality, the
place was closed for four days, the whole of the stock and the
premises were, at the owners risk, disinfected, and the walls
distempered. This procedure proved quite effective, and no
more cases occurred.
